Los preferidos de los cárteles, ‘Cuernos de chivo’ y AR-15 - A
database of the PGR, (Mex. "DOJ") made from seizures for 11 months, confirms the trends in
weaponry.
Among the harmful high
power weapons available on the black market, members of cartels and organized
crime groups operating in Mexico have a preference for assault rifles AK-47 and
AR-15.
For pistols are inclined
to calibers 38 and nine millimeters.
This follows from the
database of the Attorney General's Office (PGR), which was developed from seizures made during 11 months and that helped confirm the
"trend" in the use of firearms by criminals.
From September 1, 2013
to July 31, 2014, the agency seized 447 firearms, which represents an average
of 40 pieces-monthly seizure, of which 325 were long
guns.
Of the 447 seizures of
weapons, they were concentrated in Sinaloa (29.75 percent), Michoacán (14.09
percent, Sonora (13.42 percent), State of Mexico (11.86 percent) and Tamaulipas
(10.96 percent).
In the reference period
154 grenades were seized, of which 79 percent were 40 mm (for grenade
launcher); was followed by the hand or fragmentation (18 percent), improvised
manufacturing (2 percent) and land mines (1 percent). (land mines? or IEDs?)
The figure is well below
the 4,973 weapons from January 1 to August 31, 2014 seized by the Secretariat
of National Defense, (SEDENA) although this agency is directly responsible for
the implementation of the Federal Law on Firearms and explosives.
However, the PGR
considers the Specialized Investigation of Terrorism, Weapons Stockpiling and Trafficking Unit has improved the research
process of the previous investigations related to weapons of organized crime.
In the database they
have 8,540 firearms, which are under investigation and are tracked with the
support of the Bureau of Alcohol, Snuff, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) of the United States for the purchase
location and identity of the buyer .
While PGR combats
trafficking and weapons possession in two days criminals stole 39 weapons from
police agencies of the State of Mexico, while in Jalisco an illegal arms
factory was discovered, which was an unprecedented discovery in Mexico.

SITREPS
10/16/2014 - “Yesterday,
the U.S. Dept. of State released a new travel advisory for all of the country
of Mexico. It is rather lengthy, with a breakdown of state-by-state
activity that is described by the US DoS as violent,
and a danger to U.S. citizens.
Some locales require a
curfew for U.S. Gov't. employees.
The advisory for Sonora is robust, and warns travelers to only travel in Mexico
for exigent circumstances or necessary business. Even the road to Rocky
Pt. from Lukeville, AZ advises to Americans/tourists
to travel only during daylight hours.
Intelligence in Mexico
indicates (especially in Tamaulipas) that cartels are purposely targeting U.S.
citizens for kidnapping/extortion. Approx. 50% of kidnap victims are
murdered, whether the ransom is paid, or not.”

10/10/2014 Mexico Travel Warning.
