STATEMENT BY SENATOR JOHN McCAIN ON SENATE
JUDICIARY COMMITTEE PASSAGE OF COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM LEGISLATION
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator John
McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement on the passage of
comprehensive immigration reform legislation by the Senate Judiciary Committee:
“By a strong 13-5 vote, the Senate Judiciary
Committee tonight passed our comprehensive immigration reform legislation,
setting the stage for its consideration of the floor of the U.S. Senate next
month. Through rigorous debate and an open, transparent amendment process over
the last few weeks, the Committee improved the bill in many ways, including by
strengthening its provisions on border security, interior enforcement and
worker visas. I thank Chairman Leahy for his steadfast leadership of the
Committee, and for making tough decisions in the interest of accomplishing
landmark reform. I also applaud Senators Schumer, Graham, Durbin and Flake,
co-authors of this legislation whose hard work and dedication guided it through
the Committee. This is a significant first step, and there will be more tests
to come, but this accomplishment makes me guardedly optimistic for the success
of the legislation.”
