BOOK REVIEW: The Spirit of Dogie Long by J.P.S. Brown
If you are a western cowboy fiction fan, this book is
for you.
Uniquely written by the accomplished Western author,
J.P.S. Brown, it tells the story in the first person of the
short life of an orphan who began life as a foundling along
the trail of cattle being driven to market in California from
the rough high country and then through the lowland deserts
of Arizona. Reared by the cowboys who found him, you will
experience the ups and downs and close calls of growing up
on the trail with a bunch of cowboys through the eyes of
Dogie Long and learn about "cowboy ways".
You will add to
your vocabulary of cowboy terms, both in American English
and Spanish and experience the wonder at the world of a
"lepe" who never knew a Mother, a school, a
home, or much
else that the rest of us take for granted. You will also learn
why the full title of this book is "The Spirit of Dogie
Long".
This book is thoroughly entertaining and the ending will
touch your heart like nothing ever has before and make
you stop and think. J.P.S. Brown has created an outstanding
work of fiction again which he seems to do quite naturally,
given the string of wonderful books he has written. But then
again, that is what gifted writers who have actually "lived
