CRISIS AT THE BORDER
It is difficult for me to understand why
any citizen of the United States would support completely unchecked, open
borders with Mexico. In my mind, it is not a singular political
issue. But it is a serious national issue. It concerns
our well being and security. That’s you, me, our children,
grandchildren, other family members and our neighbors. We don’t know
who is crossing our borders, their nationality, their intentions and
ultimate locations. They are not vetted. We do not know
their Covid status. We do not know what
other contagious disease they may carry. The key here is “we do not
know” anything about these people.
Here is what we do know. In
July, one of the largest invasions occurred with CBP
(Customs/Border Patrol) Agents encountering approximately 212,000 illegal
crossers. The most since the year 2000. The estimated
total for this year is a record breaking 1.8 million illegal crossers along the
entire U.S border from Brownsville, Texas to the
Pacific Ocean, approximately 2,000 miles. For the past fiscal year (Oct ‘20 –
Sept. ‘21) an estimated 105,000 illegal aliens have avoided capture along the
262 mile CBP Tucson Sector border with
Mexico. This is the line from the New Mexico/AZ border to the
proximity of the Organ Pipe National Monument south of Ajo. The
Yuma CBP Sector occupies the remaining 115 miles to
the West in Arizona, where 6,000 illegal crossers avoided apprehension. There
are nine CBP Stations in the Tucson Sector from
Douglas to Ajo.
Of great concern are those that avoid
apprehension consisting of gang members, other criminals, possible terrorist
and other undesirables. It is known that MS 13 gang members (from El
Salvador) have invaded many communities on Long Island, NY committing murder,
rape, illegal drug distribution, extortion and general mayhem. This
is just one of many areas infested with these criminals. So, the greatest
concern in these communities is public safety. And, there is a
significant danger in the three county area of Southern Arizona where the
apprehension rate is approximately 39%.
The Mexican Cartels control the entire
border area trafficking of the illegal aliens, sex trafficking and drug
smuggling along with any other commodity that may pass.
Aiding and abetting these invaders are,
oftentimes, U.S. citizens who provide the transportation away from the border
to Tucson and Phoenix where travel throughout the U.S. is provided. The
transporters receive payments ranging from $500 to $1,000 per
person. In most cases they have no idea, and perhaps
don’t care, what dangerous activity they are unleashing on their fellow
citizens through their illegal activity.
The penalty for aiding and abetting
illegal aliens including transportation is covered under Title 8 USC 1324 and
ranges from a Class 1 misdemeanor to a felony in addition to state laws that
may exist.
Oftentimes illegal aliens are stashed in
houses and hotels/motels in both Tucson and Phoenix. In fact, in
some cases, your tax dollars are being used to fund housing along the way.
The most significant drug being smuggled
is fentanyl a deadly opioid. According to the CDC, 255 Americans die
daily from overdoses…the major cause is fentanyl. DEA reports that
there has been an increase of 56% smuggled into the U.S. with 90% crossing the
Mexican Border.
Of significance, but rarely mentioned is
the the danger to the female illegal
aliens. South of the border are Rape Gangs and once in the U.S.
these girls and women are at the mercy of their fellow crossers. At
the various travel rest sites and pick up points are found “rape trees” where
“trophies” are on display. These include accommodation rugs and
display of women’s under garments. To many females, this is a right of passage. They are seldom reported to
authorities for fear of being deported. How sad!
Another under reported fact is that 35 CBP personnel have died in the line of duty over past
sixteen years. Locally, BP Agent Brian Terry was murdered in
the Rio Rico area December 2010 while encountering a gang engaged in illegal
smuggling activity.
Finally, imagine being a resident of the
border area with the hopeless feeling of being marginalized by their own
government officials. Most are ranchers who, in many cases, have lived on the
land for many generations. Today, their cross border neighbors are
members of the Mexican Cartels. And, the illegal crossers pass
through their property, daily. Longtime rancher Robert Krentz, Jr. and his family paid the ultimate price when Mr.
Krentz was murdered by an illegal alien on his
property in 2010.
The bloated bureaucracy in our nation
seem more interested in the rights of the invaders than in the rights of our
citizens. And, It seems that the “nimby” attitude
prevails among the citizens in our nation. That is, if its not in my back yard, its
not my problem. But it is a problem and will continue to be for us
all!

Over
a two-week period, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 12, Homeland Security Secretary
Alejandro Mayorkas effectively abolished the
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. Doing away with the agency
that apprehends and removes illegal aliens has become a rallying cry for the
far left and was embraced by several contenders for the 2020 Democratic
presidential nomination – although, notably, not Joe Biden.
ICE
headquarters is still there on 12th St. S.W. in Washington, D.C. Dozens of
field offices around the country remain. The 10,000 employees of the agency
still collect paychecks. But as a result of two memos issued by Mayorkas, the agency’s immigration enforcement functions
have virtually ceased to exist. To be clear, ICE wasn’t doing much even before Mayorkas issued his edicts – ICE agents were averaging one
arrest every two and a half months – but now it’s official: ICE has been
ordered to stand down.
Mayorkas’
first memo, Guidelines
for the Enforcement of Civil Immigration Law, issued on Sept. 30, defines
who, among the 15 million or so illegal aliens living in the U.S., ICE agents
may arrest and put into removal proceedings. Under the guise of “setting
priorities,” Mayorkas limits enforcement to just
three categories of illegal aliens: Those who are deemed to be threats to
national security, such as terrorists and spies; violent criminals; and those
who entered the country after Nov. 1, 2020. And even these categories are
smaller than they might appear.
According
to the Cato
Institute (a libertarian think tank that supports mass immigration), a
grand total of 1,485 spies were arrested in the U.S. between 1990 and 2019, of
whom 583 were native-born Americans. The Department
of Justice reports that between Sept. 11, 2001 and Dec. 31, 2016, 402
foreign terrorists were arrested on U.S. soil.
When
it comes to removing violent criminals, Mayorkas’
memo carves out some rather large exceptions. “The gravity of an apprehension
and removal on a noncitizen’s life, and potentially the life of family members
and the community, warrants the dedication of investigative and evaluative
effort,” Mayorkas states.
Violent
criminals who are of “advanced or tender age,” have lived in the United States
for a “lengthy” period of time, have a mental illness that led to their
criminal conduct or whose removal would leave dependents behind, are a no-go
for ICE agents. Thus, the sweet-spot for ICE agents attempting to do their jobs
is finding a violent criminal, not too young and not too old, mentally
competent, without kids. That should keep them busy.
As
for the third category, those who were in the country less than 11 months from
the day Mayorkas issued his memo – that is nothing
more than a moneymaking opportunity for those in the business of selling bogus
rent receipts and pay stubs.
But
Mayorkas was not satisfied with declaring virtually
all illegal aliens off-limits to enforcement. On Oct. 12, he issued a
second fiat nullifying the law prohibiting employers from hiring
illegal aliens. That key provision of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control
Act (which then-Senator Joe Biden voted for), was intended to eliminate the
magnet of jobs that draws illegal aliens to the U.S. When enforced (as it was
under the Trump administration), worksite enforcement actions had the dual
benefit of nabbing large numbers of deportable aliens, and hitting scofflaw
employers with meaningful financial and criminal penalties while discouraging
others from doing the same.
Under
Mayorkas’ edict, only employers who “exploit” illegal
alien workers will be subject to enforcement actions. Needless to say,
additional penalties should be imposed on employers who mistreat workers,
regardless of their immigration status. But under new ICE policies, companies
now have a green light to hire illegal aliens in preference to American
workers, so long as they meet certain minimal employment standards – an ironic
stance, considering the president fancies himself as an ally of working
Americans, and frequently invokes his blue-collar upbringing and the struggles
his own family faced.
With
just 25 percent of
the public supporting the Biden administration’s immigration policies,
satisfying the far left’s demand and disbanding ICE entirely may have been
politically untenable, so Mayorkas has done the next
best thing: He has quietly eliminated nearly all of its functions.
